Description

Calabrese Sprouting is an old heirloom broccoli that thrives in the Sunshine State! It is an old Italian Variety brought to the United States in the late 19th Century. The key to growing good broccoli in Florida is timing. The window is limited. Below we’ll describe what the “windows” look like for North, Central, and South Florida.

North & Central Florida: Start broccoli from seed and/or transplant it into the ground as early as August or September (We recommend starting broccoli in a container or in a tray, then transplanting into the ground later).

The sooner the broccoli is planted, August-September plantings for example, sun exposure needs to be limited. August through September, three hours of direct sunlight should be the maximum. As the season transitions deeper into Fall and Winter, more direct sun is recommended. Optimal sun exposure during Winter and early Spring is four to six hours per day. As always, morning sun is preferable. Keep in mind that too much heat, can cause the broccoli plant to bolt and bloom.

South Florida: Start broccoli from seed and/or transplant it into the ground as early as the end of September through December (We recommend starting broccoli in a container or in a tray, then transplanting into the ground later).

If you are new to growing broccoli, we recommend growing some in a container. This will allow you to move your plant(s) around the yard to find the spot with the right amount of sunlight. Remember, we recommend partial sun, preferably morning, early day sun.
