Description

Waltham 29 is an old heirloom favorite broccoli, that grows well in the Sunshine State! The key to growing good broccoli in Florida is timing. The window is limited. Below we’ll describe what the “windows” look like for North, Central, and South Florida.

Seed Pack contains 140+ seeds!

North & Central Florida: Start broccoli from seed and/or transplant it into the ground as early as August or September (We recommend starting broccoli in a container or in a tray, then transplanting into the ground later).

The sooner the broccoli is planted, August-September plantings for example, sun exposure needs to be limited. August through September, three hours of direct sunlight should be the maximum. As the season transitions deeper into Fall and Winter, more direct sun is recommended. Optimal sun exposure during Winter and early Spring is four to six hours per day. As always, morning sun is preferable. Keep in mind that too much heat, can cause the broccoli plant to bolt and bloom.

South Florida: Start broccoli from seed and/or transplant it into the ground as early as the end of September through December (We recommend starting broccoli in a container or in a tray, then transplanting into the ground later).

The sooner the broccoli is planted, September plantings for example, sun exposure needs to be limited.

If you are new to growing broccoli, we recommend growing some in a container. This will allow you to move your plant(s) around the yard to find the spot with the right amount of sunlight. Remember, we recommend partial sun, preferably morning, early day sun.

  1. Rachel Allen

Bought seeds from FL Seeds and was excited to try growing the Waltham Broccoli and some Snowball Cauliflower but didn’t expect much since we are in south Florida – planted it all in October and to our delight, we have ended up with some of the most delicious and beautiful broccoli! And just a week ago, the heads have begun to form on our cauliflower plants! Once we cut the main heads off the broccoli plants, then the side shoots start sprouting smaller heads so we have had a steady supply this past month, and we haven’t had any pests whatsoever – and the iguanas have left these plants alone, which is a pleasant surprise as iguanas are our primary nuisance most of the spring and summer, eating our beans and squash plants if they can get to them. Both the broccoli and the cauliflower thrice in our native sandy soil with added compost and vermiculite. We use Neem oil and BT prevention against pests but haven’t seen any. Can’t wait to plant these again next fall!! Thank you so much!!

Eager seeds, sprouted in 1-2 days. Looking forward to finally growing some hardy broccoli.
