Description

Long Island Improved is the best Heirloom Variety of Brussels Sprout to grow in the Sunshine State. The entire plant is Nutrient-Dense, so in addition to the Sprouts, enjoy the leaves and stalk. Waste Not Want Not!

Brussels Sprouts get their names from Brussels, Belgium. They have been heavily grown around Brussels for at least 400 years!

Brussels Sprouts are a part of the Brassica Family, which includes Broccoli, Cabbage, and Kale. Brussels Sprouts are considered a superfood, being an excellent source of Vitamins, A, C, K, and much more!

Growing: Sow Seeds no deeper than 1/4″. For Brussels Sprouts, the cooler the weather, the better. Warm weather can cause the Sprouts to open up and become softer (they will still be delicious and nutritious). Cooler Weather (temperatures bellow 70 degrees) will help the sprouts to stay closed and remain tight (as they appear in the grocery store). Morning Sun is preferable early or later in the Winter Growing Season (please see specific months below) and Near Full/Full Sun is recommended when the days shorten (November through February).

Seed to Harvest: Allow 60 to 120 days

Harvest: Brussels Sprouts grow a thin stalk with a leafy top.  The actual “Sprouts” set on the stalk from the bottom up. Harvest the Sprouts near the base of the plant first because these will be more mature. Sprouts ready to be harvested, will be the size of a Walnut. The leaves and stalk are edible too, their flavor is very similar to Broccoli and Kale. Harvest early on a cool morning, to get tighter, closed Brussels Sprouts.

North & Central Florida: Grow Brussels Sprouts anytime during the Winter Growing Season. We recommend growing them anytime from August through March. Partial, preferably Morning Sun is recommended during August, but they can tolerate Full and Near Full Sun from September through March (all depending on how soon things begin cooling down).

South Florida: Grow Brussels Sprouts anytime during the Winter Growing Season. We recommend growing them anytime from September through February/March. Partial, preferably Morning Sun is recommended during September, but they can tolerate Full and Near Full Sun from October through February/March (all depending on how soon things begin cooling down).
