Pigeon Pea [Gandules] (20+ seeds)

Description

The Pigeon Pea is also known as “Gandules” throughout the Caribbean. It is a semi-perennial, meaning that if there is no frost, then the plant can live for multiple years. Generally, if there is frost, the plant will die back at the end of the growing season. This means that for North Florida and Part of Central Florida, the Pigeon Pea is an Annual. For South Florida and the other Part of Central Florida, the Pigeon Pea is a Perennial.

The Pigeon Pea is the perfect bush bean to grow in the sunshine state. Plant anytime during the Spring or Summer, Pigeon Peas thrive in Florida’s climate. Late Spring Planting is optimal for North Florida and Central Florida. Early Spring is perfect for South Florida.

Nitrogen-fixing, Pigeon Peas enrich the soil with nitrogen. A drought and poor soil tolerant crop.

Harvesting: Pigeon Peas are unique because depending on when they are harvested, they can be treated as a pea or a bean. If harvested early, before the pods become brown and dry, they can be eaten fresh, much like green peas. If harvested after the pods become brown and dry, prepare Pigeon Peas the way that you would a bean (pintos, black bean, black eyed peas, etc.)

Planting: Sow seeds no deeper than 1/4″ to 1/3″.

Seed Saving: Dry the pods out and save the peas to be re-planted the following years.
