Description

Passion Fruit is a fruiting New World Vine, originally native to South America. It produces beautiful purple and white flowers, whose center resembles a crucifix. Many believe the name Passion Fruit and Passion Flower originate from the Spanish naming it after the Passion of Christ. The flower is an “Old Florida” symbol of the Easter Holiday.

The vines easily grow in Central and South Florida, but can be more difficult to maintain year-round in North Florida (due to colder temperatures). Not only is the Passion Fruit Vine a practical food crop, but it enriches the beauty of any Florida Garden!

The vine is a climber, so make sure that it has a trellis, fence, or wall to grow onto. Once established, it will first produce stunning flowers, then yield egg-sized passion fruit. Passion fruit can be eaten raw or juiced. It is also commonly used in making salad dressings and cocktails.

Passion Fruit seeds can be slow to germinate, so do not give up on them! Sometimes it can take multiple weeks for them to sprout. Make sure to sow seeds no deeper than 1/4″.
